How an Eskom Billing Dispute Forced Me Completely Off-Grid This article documents how an Eskom billing dispute, driven by mismatched meter readings, estimated invoices, and unresolved account discrepancies, escalated into a full electricity disconnection. While attempting to resolve the issue through formal communication and evidence submission, the supply was cut despite the dispute remaining active. In response, the author accelerated a planned solar transition and progressively expanded an existing hybrid system into a fully off-grid setup. Built over time on a shaded, forested property in South Africa, the system required significant structural modifications, additional solar capacity, and a major battery upgrade to achieve full independence. The result is a real-world case study of energy resilience under non-ideal conditions, highlighting both the technical and financial realities of going off-grid. The experience reframes solar not just as backup power, but as a pathway to reducing long-term vulnerability to utility instability. Read More →
